Cross Jewelry Questions

Can anyone wear cross jewelry, or only Christians?

Anyone can. Whether you should is about your own intent, and people answer differently. For most Christians it's a statement of faith; for others it's inherited, cultural, or simply a shape they like. Nobody checks. But in contexts where the symbol carries weight, expect it to be read as belief.

What's the difference between a cross and a crucifix?

A crucifix has the figure of Christ on it; a plain cross doesn't. The crucifix is more associated with Catholic and Orthodox tradition, the empty cross with Protestant — the reasoning being that the empty cross emphasises the resurrection. Everything in this collection is a plain cross.

Is wearing a cross idolatry?

Denominations disagree, which is worth knowing rather than guessing at. Catholic and Orthodox traditions have worn crosses for centuries without issue. Some Reformed and Protestant churches are cautious about religious images generally. The usual line is between honouring what it represents and treating the object itself as powerful.

Is a cross appropriate as a gift?

For a confirmation, baptism or christening it's the traditional choice and reads correctly. Outside a religious occasion, be reasonably sure the person wears one or wants to — a cross isn't a neutral pendant, and giving one to someone who doesn't wear it puts them in an awkward position.

Why do cross pendants break?

The jump ring or the chain, nearly always — not the cross. An open ring works loose over months of movement, and sleeping in it does most of the damage. There's a common belief that a breaking cross took something for you; that's folklore sitting alongside a worn jump ring.

Will gold vermeil hold up on daily wear?

Ours is 3.0 microns of gold over solid sterling silver, against an industry standard of 0.2 and 0.5 on most gold-plated jewelry. That's the difference between years and a season. Perfume and chlorine shorten it faster than time does.
