Are these real pearls?
Yes — real freshwater cultured pearls, grown in mussels, hand-selected for shape and lustre. "Cultured" means a farmer started the process; the pearl itself is made entirely by the mollusc, layer by layer, which is the only way a real pearl is made. What they are not is imitation (glass or plastic coated to look pearly). Each one is slightly different from the next, which is how you know.

What is the difference between freshwater pearls and Akoya or saltwater pearls?
Where they grew, and the price. Freshwater pearls come from mussels in lakes and rivers, mostly in China; they are solid nacre all the way through, which makes them durable, and they come in the soft, slightly irregular shapes you see here. Akoya and South Sea pearls grow in saltwater oysters, are rounder and more mirror-bright, and cost many times more. For jewelry you will wear on a Tuesday, freshwater is the sensible pearl.

Is this bracelet real gold?
Yes — it is 18K gold vermeil: a thick layer of real 18K gold bonded over solid 925 sterling silver. Vermeil is an FTC-defined standard, not a marketing word, and ours uses a gold layer at least five times thicker than standard plating. Under it is sterling silver, which is hypoallergenic and worth something on its own. You can also choose the Prestige Gold option (the same 18K gold over a brass core) if you want the look for less and wear it less often. Every vermeil piece is covered by our 2-year warranty.

How do I care for pearl jewelry — can pearls get wet?
Pearls go on last and come off first. Perfume, hairspray and lotion dull the nacre, and pool chlorine will etch it, so they are the one material that truly prefers to stay out of water. A quick wipe with a soft damp cloth after wear is all the cleaning they need; never jewelry dip, never an ultrasonic. Stored in the pouch away from harder jewelry, a freshwater pearl outlasts the outfit it was bought for.

What does a pearl necklace mean?
Wisdom earned the hard way — a pearl is a grain of irritation the oyster turned into something beautiful, and every culture noticed. It has meant purity (hence brides), wealth, and in the last decade, the opposite of stuffy: pearls worn with a white T-shirt and a leather jacket are the current read. If someone asks about the slang meaning, the joke is older than the internet and the necklace is innocent.

Can I shower or sleep in my gold vermeil bracelet?
Sleep in it, yes. Shower in it, no. Water, sweat, perfume and hairspray are what age gold vermeil fastest, so the rule is simple: jewelry goes on last and comes off before the shower, the pool or the gym. Put it on after lotion and perfume have dried. When it is off, keep it in the pouch it came in — the pouch is anti-tarnish, not decoration. Almost certainly — it is adjustable and sized to fit the average woman's wrist with room to spare. To check, wrap a soft tape measure (or a strip of paper) snugly around the wrist bone, note the number, and add half an inch for a comfortable fit or a full inch for a loose, sliding fit; most women land between 6.5 and 7.5 inches.
