A promise ring is the one you give when an engagement ring would be too much and nothing at all would be too little. Solitaires, plain bands, marquise and bezel settings, and thin stacking rings — kept deliberately quieter than anything you'd propose with. What does a promise ring actually mean?

Whatever the two of you agree it means, and that conversation matters more than the ring. Most commonly it's a commitment to a future engagement. It's also used for exclusivity without a timeline, for long distance, and between friends and family members with no romance involved at all. The one failure mode is giving one without saying which you mean.

Which finger and which hand does a promise ring go on?

The left ring finger is the most common, which is also why some couples deliberately avoid it — it invites the wrong question. The right ring finger is the usual alternative and reads clearly as "not engaged". Either is correct; there's no rule, only what you want strangers to assume.

Are promise rings childish?

They have a reputation as a teenage thing, mostly from how they were marketed in the nineties. In practice adults use them constantly — during long engagements, before a partner is ready, or where marriage isn't the goal. A plain solitaire on the right hand doesn't read as young. An oversized heart with an inscription does.

Is a promise ring the same as an engagement ring?

No, and the difference is intent rather than design. An engagement ring says a wedding is being planned. A promise ring says the relationship is serious. They can look identical, which is exactly why the conversation matters — a solitaire on the left ring finger will be read as an engagement whatever you intended.

How much should a promise ring cost?

Far less than an engagement ring, which is most of the point. Ours start at $45. Spending engagement-ring money on a promise ring tends to confuse the message rather than strengthen it.

Can promise rings be given between friends?

Yes — friendship and purity rings both use the same object, and neither is unusual. If that's the intent, a band or a signet reads more clearly than a solitaire, which carries romantic associations no amount of explanation removes.
