Initial Necklaces with Birthstone

An initial with a birthstone beside it says two things in the space of one pendant. A single letter paired with a natural stone — amethyst, garnet, emerald, ruby, turquoise, moonstone and the rest — in 18K gold vermeil at 3 microns over solid sterling silver, or gold plated. Gold, silver and rose gold, 14 to 20 inches, from $49.

Initial & Birthstone Questions

Should the initial and stone be the same person's?

Usually, and that's the cleanest version — one letter, one stone, one person. Mixing them, your initial with a child's stone, works too and is how a lot of mothers wear it. What doesn't read well is three unrelated combinations on one chain.

Which birthstone goes with which month?

January garnet, February amethyst, March aquamarine, April diamond, May emerald, June moonstone or pearl, July ruby, August peridot, September sapphire, October opal or tourmaline, November citrine or topaz, December turquoise, tanzanite or blue zircon. Several months carry more than one — traditional and modern lists disagree, both count.

Are the stones real?

The natural stone versions use genuine amethyst, garnet, turquoise, moonstone and the rest — real minerals, cut and set. They're not high-clarity gemstones and aren't priced as if they were. Where a design uses CZ for sparkle, the product page says so. Nothing in this store is a real diamond.

Is it a good gift?

It's the upgrade for someone who already owns a plain initial necklace — same idea, more specific, doesn't duplicate. It also avoids the two risks of name jewelry: no spelling to get wrong and no font decision to guess at.

What length works best?

16 or 18 inches. The pendant is compact, so it needs to sit high enough to be seen — at 22 a small letter-and-stone disappears into a neckline. 14 is for layering above something longer.

Will the stone hold up to daily wear?

Depends which stone. Garnet, ruby and sapphire are hard and shrug off ordinary wear. Opal, moonstone and turquoise are soft — 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale — and will mark over time. Necklaces treat stones far more gently than rings do, so this matters less here than it would on a hand.
