The necklace is okay but be warned: the pendants do NOT come off of the chain and make no mistakes with your order because they will not work with you or change anything even prior to the jewelry being assembled or shipped. They also claim in their item details that they accept returns but upon request they will deny you and say that they only accept returns for some of their other items. I messaged back and forth with Melissa, who was not the nicest, after I had a complication with 2 separate orders. After pointing out that their shop and item return policy in the descriptions are not being upheld, she offered a replacement/discount but after agreeing, I was ignored and never responded to on behalf of the shop, which was months ago at this point. It was supposed to be a gift for my sister but apparently it didn’t work out.

I had expected a different stone for my sons birth month than what I received. So I contacted them to let them know and they offered to send me a new charms that better represents my son’s birth month. What is my birthstone?
January garnet (deep red), February amethyst (purple), March aquamarine (pale blue), April diamond (clear; ours is a clear CZ), May emerald (green), June pearl or alexandrite (white or violet), July ruby (red), August peridot (light green), September sapphire (blue), October opal or pink tourmaline (iridescent or pink), November citrine or topaz (yellow), December turquoise, tanzanite or blue zircon (blue). That is the modern American birthstone list, which our CZ birthstones follow; if you grew up with a different chart, choose by colour. The natural birthstone necklace works differently: you choose the natural stone itself by name, so pick the one whose colour or meaning you love.

Are the birthstones real gemstones?
It depends on the design. The natural birthstone necklace uses a raw, uncut natural stone, so every one is slightly different. Every other birthstone design uses cubic zirconia (CZ) in each month's colour, cut and set the way gemstones are, chosen because the colour is exact for each month and stays that way. Whichever stone you choose, it is set in the metal you pick and covered by the same warranty as the metal: 1 year on Gold Plated, 2 years on 18K Gold Vermeil and 14K Solid Gold.

Is this necklace real gold?
It depends on the metal you pick, and only one of the three is solid gold. 14K Solid Gold is solid 14K gold all the way through, not a layer over another metal. 18K Gold Vermeil is a 3.0-micron layer of real 18K gold over solid 925 sterling silver — 15 times the 0.2-micron industry standard, and vermeil is an FTC-defined term, not a marketing word. Gold Plated is a 0.5-micron layer of 18K gold over a brass base, 2.5 times that standard. Choosing White Gold/Silver? On vermeil it is the sterling silver itself, on plated a silver-tone finish over brass, and on 14K solid white gold. Warranty: 1 year on Gold Plated, 2 years on vermeil and 14K.

What is different about 14K Solid Gold?
It is the same design, made of gold instead of finished in it. 14K means 58.5% pure gold, alloyed for strength — the standard for fine jewelry you wear every day. It is solid gold all the way through, not a layer over another metal: no base metal underneath, nothing to wear through. That is why it costs more — with vermeil and plated, the gold is a surface layer measured in microns; with 14K, the gold is the metal the piece is made of. The gold does not tarnish and does not mind the shower or sleep, and it is the one that gets handed down. 2-year warranty. Every 14K piece is made to order, so it takes 4 business days longer than vermeil or plated.

Can I add more than one birthstone for my kids?
On our family designs, yes — they hold up to five stones, one per person. You choose each stone by month in the order you want them set, left to right or top to bottom depending on the design. Two stones for a couple; three, four, five for a family; and if the family grows, the bar and family necklaces can usually take another. A design made for a set number of stones, like a single-stone or a double design, holds just that many.

What order should the stones go in on a mother's necklace, ring or bracelet?
Birth order, oldest first reading left to right, is the convention — and the one that is easiest to explain when someone asks. The other popular arrangement puts the mother's own stone in the centre with the children on either side. Either way, tell us the months in the order you want them set; we do not rearrange.

Can I shower or sleep in my necklace?
It depends on the metal. 14K Solid Gold: yes to both — it is solid gold all the way through and does not tarnish, so it can stay on in the shower, in bed and every day in between. The one exception is a piece with pearls or soft natural stones: those come off before water whatever the metal. 18K Gold Vermeil: sleep in it, yes; shower, pool and gym, no. Gold Plated: off before the shower, the pool and the gym, and ideally at night too — water, sweat and perfume are what wear plating down fastest. With vermeil or plated, jewelry goes on last, after lotion and perfume have dried, and back in its anti-tarnish pouch when it comes off. Clean the metal with a soft dry cloth; never use jewelry dip or anything abrasive on vermeil or plated, which strips the finish.

Do birthstone colours fade or fall out?
The colour is in the stone, not on it, so it does not fade. Stones are held in a bezel (a rim of metal all the way round) on most of our designs, which is the most secure setting there is — nothing to snag, no prongs to bend. On 18K Gold Vermeil or Gold Plated, the finish is what needs looking after: off before water and the gym, on after perfume. 14K Solid Gold is gold all the way through, so the metal is fine in the shower and overnight. The raw stone on the natural birthstone necklace is the exception: take it off before water, whatever the metal. If a stone ever does come loose under normal wear, the warranty covers it: 1 year on Gold Plated, 2 years on vermeil and 14K.

Is birthstone jewelry a good gift for mom?
It is the mother's-day gift that does not get returned. One stone per child on a necklace, ring or bracelet says the thing she would never say about herself, and it reads as a dainty piece of gold to everyone else. If you do not know the kids' exact months, ask a sibling — do not guess. It arrives in our gift box with a suede pouch.

How long does a personalized necklace take to arrive?
Most personalized orders arrive within 5 to 9 business days in the US: 3 to 5 business days for us to make it, then free USPS shipping that takes 2 to 4 days. In 14K Solid Gold, allow 4 more business days, so 9 to 13 in all. Your name, stone or engraving is part of the piece, not a sticker on top: on vermeil and plated it is added before the finish goes on, and on 14K it is in the solid gold itself. You get a tracking number the moment it ships. Because it is made for you, spelling and size cannot change once we start making it, so take one more look at the personalization before you pay. We ship worldwide; international delivery is 5 to 14 business days depending on the country, and duties are the buyer's.

What length necklace should I get?
If you are unsure, choose 18 inches — it sits just below the collarbone and works on almost everyone and with almost every neckline. 16 inches sits at the collarbone (the most popular length for dainty pendants and for layering as the top chain). 14 inches is a choker fit. 20 inches drops a few inches lower and is the right choice over a crew neck or as the bottom layer in a stack. This piece comes in 14, 16, 18 and 20 inches. If you are between lengths, go longer — a chain can always sit a little lower, and if a chain you already own comes up short, our 1, 2 and 3 inch extenders fix that in one clip.
