Is it a real diamond?
No — it is cubic zirconia, a lab-made crystal cut and set exactly as a diamond would be, and we say so in the first sentence on purpose. The gold is the real thing: solid 14K, all the way through. A diamond this size would cost what a used car costs; CZ gives you the same cut and the same white fire, and from anything further than a jeweler's loupe, the same look. The difference is the price and the receipt.

Can people tell cubic zirconia from a diamond?
Not by looking. CZ is slightly brighter and throws a touch more rainbow fire than a diamond; a diamond has more white sparkle and looks a little greyer in low light. Jewelers tell them apart with a thermal tester or by weight (CZ is heavier for its size). Across a dinner table, in daylight, on a fine gold chain — no one can tell, and the ones who could will not say anything.

Is it 14K solid gold all the way through?
Yes — solid 14K gold, no plating, nothing underneath, nothing to wear off. 14K means 58.5% pure gold alloyed for strength, which is the standard for fine jewelry you wear daily. It is naturally hypoallergenic, it will not tarnish, and it is the kind of piece you can hand down without a second thought. The only thing it ever needs is the occasional polish.

Does cubic zirconia get cloudy or lose its sparkle?
It gets dirty, which looks like cloudy, and it cleans right back. CZ itself is hard (8 to 8.5 on the Mohs scale, harder than steel) and does not yellow, scratch or dull on its own; what dulls it is the film of lotion, soap and skin oil that settles on any clear stone in a week of wear. Warm water, a drop of dish soap, a soft toothbrush, thirty seconds — and it is as bright as the day it arrived.

How do I clean a CZ necklace?
A bowl of warm water with a drop of mild dish soap, five minutes, then a soft toothbrush around the stone and the setting, rinse, and dry with a soft cloth. Do this every couple of weeks, or whenever it looks tired. Solid gold does not mind water, so the shower will not hurt it — but soap film is what clouds a stone, so a quick rinse afterwards keeps it bright.

Can I wear a solid gold necklace in the shower and to sleep?
Yes to both. Solid 14K gold does not tarnish, has no plating to wear through and does not react to water or sweat, so this is the necklace you put on and forget about. Soap film and lotion will dull any gold over time — a soak in warm water with a drop of dish soap, then a soft cloth, brings the shine back in a minute.

What is a solitaire necklace, and is bezel or prong setting better?
A solitaire is a single stone on a chain — one stone, no bar, nothing else asking for attention. A prong setting holds the stone with tiny claws so more light gets in; a bezel setting wraps the stone in a rim of gold, which snags nothing and loses nothing. This pendant is bezel-set: the necklace you wear under sweaters and never think about.

Is a solid gold solitaire a good gift?

How long is the chain?
This piece comes in 16 inches. As a guide to necklace lengths: 16 inches sits right on the collarbone, the most popular length for a dainty pendant; 18 inches falls just below it and works with almost every neckline; 20 inches sits a little lower, over a crew neck or as the bottom layer in a stack.
