I bought this necklace awhile back but it parts of it turned black and tarnished. I thought it was sunscreen that tarnished it the first time so I bought another one. I checked the item description before buying my second one and it says tarnish free, but after a shower my second necklace has also turned black in some spots.

Everything people ask before they buy this necklace.

Is it a real diamond?
No — it is cubic zirconia, a lab-made crystal cut and set exactly as a diamond would be, and we say so in the first sentence on purpose. A real diamond this size would cost what a used car costs; CZ gives you the same cut, the same white fire and, set in 18K gold vermeil over sterling silver, the same look from anything further than a jeweler's loupe. The difference is the price and the receipt.

Can people tell cubic zirconia from a diamond?
Not by looking. CZ is slightly brighter and throws a touch more rainbow fire than a diamond; a diamond has more white sparkle and looks a little greyer in low light. Jewelers tell them apart with a thermal tester or by weight (CZ is heavier for its size). Across a dinner table, in daylight, on a fine gold chain — no one can tell, and the ones who could will not say anything.

Is this necklace real gold?
Yes — it is 18K gold vermeil: a thick layer of real 18K gold bonded over solid 925 sterling silver. Vermeil is an FTC-defined standard, not a marketing word, and ours uses a gold layer at least five times thicker than standard plating. Under it is sterling silver, which is hypoallergenic and worth something on its own. You can also choose the Prestige Gold option (the same 18K gold over a brass core) if you want the look for less and wear it less often. Every vermeil piece is covered by our 2-year warranty.

Does cubic zirconia get cloudy or lose its sparkle?
It gets dirty, which looks like cloudy, and it cleans right back. CZ itself is hard (8 to 8.5 on the Mohs scale, harder than steel) and does not yellow, scratch or dull on its own; what dulls it is the film of lotion, soap and skin oil that settles on any clear stone in a week of wear. Warm water, a drop of dish soap, a soft toothbrush, thirty seconds — and it is as bright as the day it arrived.

How do I clean a CZ necklace?
A bowl of warm water with a drop of mild dish soap, five minutes, then a soft toothbrush around the stone and the setting, rinse, and dry with a soft cloth. Do this every couple of weeks, or whenever it looks tired. Skip jewelry dip and ultrasonic cleaners — they are hard on the gold layer, not the stone — and keep it out of the shower, where soap film does the clouding in the first place.

Can I shower or sleep in my gold vermeil necklace?
Sleep in it, yes. Shower in it, no. Water, sweat, perfume and hairspray are what age gold vermeil fastest, so the rule is simple: jewelry goes on last and comes off before the shower, the pool or the gym. Put it on after lotion and perfume have dried. When it is off, keep it in the pouch it came in — the pouch is anti-tarnish, not decoration. To clean it, a soft dry cloth; never jewelry dip or anything abrasive, which strips the gold. Treated this way, vermeil keeps its colour for years, which is exactly why we can put a 2-year warranty behind it.

What is a solitaire necklace, and is bezel or prong setting better?
A solitaire is a single stone on a chain — one stone, no bar, nothing else asking for attention. A prong setting holds the stone with tiny claws so more light gets in and it sparkles harder; a bezel setting wraps the stone in a rim of gold, which snags nothing and loses nothing. Prong for the dressier look; bezel for the necklace you wear under sweaters and never think about.

Is a CZ necklace a good bridesmaid gift?
It is the bridesmaid gift that gets worn after the wedding. A single CZ solitaire on a fine gold chain works with every dress colour on the day and with a T-shirt the Monday after; order one per woman in the same metal and nobody feels singled out. It arrives in our gift box with a suede pouch, which means no wrapping for the bride.

How fast does this necklace ship?

Expedited shipping is available at checkout for ready-to-ship items. You get a tracking number by email when it is on its way, and it arrives in our signature gift box with a suede pouch, so if it is a gift you are already done. We ship worldwide; international delivery runs 5 to 14 business days depending on the destination, and any customs duties are the buyer's.

What length necklace should I get?
If you are unsure, choose 18 inches — it sits just below the collarbone and works on almost everyone and with almost every neckline. 16 inches sits at the collarbone (the most popular length for dainty pendants and for layering as the top chain). 14 inches is a choker fit. 20 inches drops a few inches lower and is the right choice over a crew neck or as the bottom layer in a stack. This piece comes in 14, 16, 18 and 20 inches. If you are between lengths, go longer — a chain can always sit a little lower, and if a chain you already own comes up short, our 1, 2 and 3 inch extenders fix that in one clip.
