Questions, answered

Everything people ask before they buy this earrings.

Are the stones real?

Yes. Each stud has a round blue sapphire at its centre — 0.29 carat across the pair — framed by eight natural mined diamonds, 0.24 carat across the pair, E–F colour and SI clarity. 0.53 carat in all. The studs ship with an IGI (International Gemological Institute) certificate.

How are they made?

A round sapphire sits in the centre in its own claws, and eight round diamonds are set around it, each in its own claw, so the outline reads as a small eight-pointed star. The gallery underneath is open, which lets light in through the stones.

Are these 18K solid gold all the way through?

Yes — solid 18K gold, no plating, no base metal, nothing to wear off. 18K is 75% pure gold, where the 14K most fine jewellery is made from is 58.5%, so this is a step up in purity and in price. It is naturally hypoallergenic, it will not tarnish, and it is the one tier in our range you can hand down without a second thought. The one trade-off for the extra gold is that 18K is slightly softer than 14K, so it marks a little more easily. The only thing that ever needs attention is the occasional polish.

How big are they?

About seven millimetres across — a classic, small halo stud that sits neatly on the lobe. Big enough to show the blue clearly, small enough for every day. Each pair is handmade, so sizes vary very slightly.

What colour is the sapphire?

A deep, dark blue — it reads almost navy in soft light and shows its blue when the light hits it, set off by the bright white diamonds around it.

Can I shower or sleep in them?

Showering is fine — solid 18K gold does not tarnish, has no plating to wear through and does not react to water or sweat. These sit on a post with a push-on back, so for sleeping check the back is pushed firmly up to the lobe, or take them out overnight if you move about a lot. Soap film, lotion and hairspray dull any gold: soak them now and then in warm water with a drop of mild soap, rinse, and dry with a soft cloth, paying attention to the back of the setting, where residue collects.

Can I wear them every day?

Yes. Sapphire is one of the hardest gemstones, second only to diamond, and solid 18K gold has no plating to wear off. They sit close to the lobe, so they don't catch on hair or scarves. Take them off for swimming and the gym, and check the claws now and then.

Are they a good gift?

One of the easiest. Sapphire is the September birthstone and the traditional gift for a 45th anniversary, and a small halo stud suits every age and every style. They ship with their IGI certificate.

How long does this earrings take to arrive?

It is handcrafted to order, so please allow up to 15 business days for it to be made before it ships. Once it ships, free standard USPS shipping takes 2 to 4 business days in the US, and you get a tracking number by email the moment it is on its way. Made-to-order pieces cannot be changed after checkout, so take one more look at your choices before you pay. It arrives in our signature gift box with a suede pouch. We ship worldwide; international delivery runs 5 to 14 business days depending on the destination, and any customs duties are the buyer's.

Are these earrings good for sensitive ears?

Yes. The part that touches your piercing is sterling silver (under 18K gold vermeil), 316L surgical steel, or solid 14K gold depending on the tier you choose — all three are nickel-safe and the same metals piercing studios use for fresh piercings. The reaction most people blame on "gold earrings" is actually nickel or brass in cheap posts, and there is none in ours. If your ears are very reactive, choose the 18K gold vermeil or solid gold option and wipe the posts with a little rubbing alcohol before the first wear.
