Description

A single princess-cut natural diamond in each ear, set corner-up inside a square white gold mount whose four corners are drawn out into sharp claws. The result reads as a small eight-pointed star rather than a plain square — architectural, a little unexpected, and far more interesting than the round solitaire stud everyone already owns. At 0.97 carat for the pair, these are a serious half carat per ear.

The princess cut is square from above with its facets arranged in a cross underneath, so it throws light in sharp white flashes rather than the soft fire of a round brilliant. Setting the stone corner-up and wrapping its vulnerable points in metal is both the prettiest and the sturdiest way to wear one.

Are these real diamonds?
Yes. One natural mined diamond in each ear, princess cut, EF colour and VS clarity, 0.97 carat for the pair — so roughly half a carat per ear. They ship with an IGI (International Gemological Institute) certificate. Nothing here is lab-grown and nothing is a simulant.

What is a princess cut, and why choose it over a round?
A princess cut is square from above with the facets arranged in a cross underneath, so it throws light in sharper, whiter flashes than the softer fire of a round brilliant. It also keeps more of the original rough, which is why a princess carries more visible spread for its weight. Here each stone is set corner-up, which reads as a tiny diamond shape rather than a square and makes the whole stud look like a small star.

Are these 14K solid gold all the way through?
Yes — solid 14K gold, no plating, no base metal, nothing to wear off. 14K means 58.5% pure gold alloyed for strength, which is the standard for fine jewelry you wear daily. It is naturally hypoallergenic, it will not tarnish, and it is the one tier in our range you can hand down without a second thought. The only thing that ever needs attention is the occasional polish.

How big are they on the ear?
Each stone is about 4.4 mm square and the setting is roughly 7 mm across the outer points — about the width of a pencil, smaller than your little fingernail. On most ears that sits well inside the lobe with bare skin showing all around it. Present without being a statement. Made by hand, so sizes vary very slightly.

What holds the stone in, and what back do they have?
The stone sits down inside a square white gold mount that wraps its four edges, with the corners of the mount drawn out into claws that cover the stone's points — the most vulnerable part of any princess cut. It is a sturdier arrangement than four thin prongs. The back is a standard post with a push-on butterfly; push it all the way up to the lobe so the post cannot work loose. If you would rather have screw-backs, message us before you order and we will ask the workshop.

Can I shower or sleep in solid gold studs?
Showering is fine — solid 14K gold does not tarnish, has no plating to wear through and does not react to water or sweat. For sleeping, these have push-on butterfly backs rather than screw backs, so check the back is pushed firmly up to the lobe, or take them out overnight if you move about a lot. Soap film, lotion and hairspray dull any gold: soak them now and then in warm water with a drop of mild soap, rinse, and dry with a soft cloth. Pay attention to the back of the cluster, where residue collects.

Will they feel heavy or pull on my piercing?
No. Half a carat of diamond in a small gold mount weighs very little, and a stud rests on the lobe rather than hanging from it, so there is nothing dragging downward — which is what stretches a piercing over time.

Can I wear them every day?
Yes. Solid 14K white gold does not tarnish and has no plating to wear through, the stone is set into the metal rather than perched on top, and a stud has nothing to snag on a scarf or a jumper. Take them out for the pool, and wash them in warm soapy water now and then — the back of a setting collects more lotion and hairspray than you would think.

Are these earrings good for sensitive ears?
Yes. The part that touches your piercing is sterling silver (under 18K gold vermeil), 316L surgical steel, or solid 14K gold depending on the tier you choose — all three are nickel-safe and the same metals piercing studios use for fresh piercings. The reaction most people blame on "gold earrings" is actually nickel or brass in cheap posts, and there is none in ours. If your ears are very reactive, choose the 18K gold vermeil or solid gold option and wipe the posts with a little rubbing alcohol before the first wear.
