Description

These pear-shaped stud earrings gather 0.94 carat of natural diamonds into a single teardrop of 14K solid white gold. In each one, a small pear, three marquises and a round brilliant are fitted together as an illusion cluster and ringed by a halo of round brilliants, so from across a room each ear reads as one much larger pear-cut diamond. Worn point up on a straight post with butterfly backs; EF colour, VS2 clarity, IGI certified.

Are these real diamonds?
Yes - every stone is a natural mined diamond, and the pair ships with an IGI (International Gemological Institute) certificate. There is 0.94 carat of diamond across the pair, graded EF colour and VS2 clarity: near-colourless, with inclusions you would need a loupe and some patience to find. Nothing here is lab-grown and nothing is a simulant.

Why does each earring look like one big pear diamond?
Because it is meant to. This is an illusion cluster: in each earring a small pear, three marquises and a round brilliant are fitted together inside a teardrop outline, and a halo of small round diamonds runs around them. From conversational distance each ear reads as a single, much larger pear-cut stone. The 0.94 carat on this page is the real combined weight of every diamond in the pair, not the size the cluster appears to be.

Are these 14K solid gold all the way through?
Yes — solid 14K gold, no plating, no base metal, nothing to wear off. 14K means 58.5% pure gold alloyed for strength, which is the standard for fine jewelry you wear daily. It is naturally hypoallergenic, it will not tarnish, and it is the one tier in our range you can hand down without a second thought. The only thing that ever needs attention is the occasional polish.

How big are they?
About 13 mm from point to base and about 9 mm across - roughly half an inch tall. On most ears that covers the fleshy part of the lobe, with the point leaning up toward the ear and the rounded end just at the bottom of the lobe. Noticeable from across a table, still a stud rather than a chandelier. Made by hand, so each pair can vary very slightly.

What kind of back do they have?
A straight post with a push-on butterfly back, the fitting most people already use for studs: quick to put in, nothing to unscrew. Push the butterfly all the way up to the lobe so the post sits firm and the teardrop stays upright. If you would rather have screw backs for peace of mind, message us before you order and we will ask the workshop.

Can I shower or sleep in solid gold studs?
Showering is fine — solid 14K gold does not tarnish, has no plating to wear through and does not react to water or sweat. For sleeping, these have push-on butterfly backs rather than screw backs, so check the back is pushed firmly up to the lobe, or take them out overnight if you move about a lot. Soap film, lotion and hairspray dull any gold: soak them now and then in warm water with a drop of mild soap, rinse, and dry with a soft cloth. Pay attention to the back of the cluster, where residue collects.

Which way up do they go?
Point up, as in the photographs. The rounded end of the teardrop sits low on the lobe and the point leans toward the ear, which lengthens the line of the ear instead of pulling it down. The post is fixed in the back of the setting, so once it is in, it stays that way round.

Can I wear them every day?
Yes. Solid 14K gold does not tarnish, the diamonds are held in claws set into the halo rather than glued, and a stud has nothing to catch on a scarf or a jumper. Take them out for the pool and the gym, and give them a wash in warm, mildly soapy water now and then with a soft brush - the back of a cluster collects more lotion and hairspray than you would think.

Are these earrings good for sensitive ears?
Yes. The part that touches your piercing is sterling silver (under 18K gold vermeil), 316L surgical steel, or solid 14K gold depending on the tier you choose — all three are nickel-safe and the same metals piercing studios use for fresh piercings. The reaction most people blame on "gold earrings" is actually nickel or brass in cheap posts, and there is none in ours. If your ears are very reactive, choose the 18K gold vermeil or solid gold option and wipe the posts with a little rubbing alcohol before the first wear.
