Everything people ask before they buy this earring.

What size stud earrings should I choose?

3 mm is barely there (a second piercing, a child, a hospital shift); 4 mm is the classic everyday stud; 5 mm is noticeable without being a statement; 6 mm reads from across a room. The number is the diameter of the stone or disc, not the post, so if you are replacing a pair you love, measure them. This pair comes in one size; if you want its exact size in millimetres before you order, message us and we will tell you.

Screw back or butterfly back — which is better?

Screw back, if you never want to lose one. The post is threaded and the back screws on, so it cannot slide off on a towel, a scarf or a sleeping child. Butterfly (push) backs are faster to put in and fine for earrings you change often. Flat backs — a flat disc that sits against the back of the lobe — are the most comfortable for sleeping and for cartilage. If the back matters to you, message us before you order and we will tell you which one this pair has.

Is this earring real gold?

It depends on the metal you pick, and only one of the three is solid gold. 14K Solid Gold is solid 14K gold all the way through, not a layer over another metal. 18K Gold Vermeil is a 3.0-micron layer of real 18K gold over solid 925 sterling silver — 15 times the 0.2-micron industry standard, and vermeil is an FTC-defined term, not a marketing word. Gold Plated is a 0.5-micron layer of 18K gold over a brass base, 2.5 times that standard. Choosing White Gold/Silver? On vermeil it is the sterling silver itself, on plated a silver-tone finish over brass, and on 14K solid white gold. Warranty: 1 year on Gold Plated, 2 years on vermeil and 14K.

What is different about 14K Solid Gold?

It is the same design, made of gold instead of finished in it. 14K means 58.5% pure gold, alloyed for strength — the standard for fine jewelry you wear every day. It is solid gold all the way through, not a layer over another metal: no base metal underneath, nothing to wear through. That is why it costs more — with vermeil and plated, the gold is a surface layer measured in microns; with 14K, the gold is the metal the piece is made of. The gold does not tarnish and does not mind the shower or sleep, and it is the one that gets handed down. 2-year warranty. Every 14K piece is made to order, so it takes 4 business days longer than vermeil or plated.

Can I wear these studs in a cartilage or second piercing?

Second lobe piercings, yes. For cartilage, the right stud is a flat-back with a short post, because a butterfly back pressed into the helix is what makes cartilage piercings sore — so ask us which back this pair has before it goes in a helix. For a healed cartilage piercing, choose 14K Solid Gold in yellow or rose: there is no layer to wear through on a stud you never take out. If your piercing is under a year old, wear the jewelry your piercer put in until it is fully healed.

How do I take out and store stud earrings?

Hold the front of the stud still with one hand and take the back off with the other — unscrew a screw back, slide a butterfly back straight off — without bending the post. Once the stud is out, put the back onto the post again, so each stud and its back stay together and the back is never the piece that goes missing. Store them like that, fastened, in their pouch and away from harder jewelry that can scratch the stones or the gold.

Can I shower or sleep in my earring?

It depends on the metal. 14K Solid Gold: yes to both — it is solid gold all the way through and does not tarnish, so it can stay on in the shower, in bed and every day in between. The one exception is a piece with pearls or soft natural stones: those come off before water whatever the metal. 18K Gold Vermeil: sleep in it, yes; shower, pool and gym, no. Gold Plated: off before the shower, the pool and the gym, and ideally at night too — water, sweat and perfume are what wear plating down fastest. With vermeil or plated, jewelry goes on last, after lotion and perfume have dried, and back in its anti-tarnish pouch when it comes off. Clean the metal with a soft dry cloth; never use jewelry dip or anything abrasive on vermeil or plated, which strips the finish.

How do I clean stud earrings?

Gently, and the method depends on the metal. On 18K Gold Vermeil and Gold Plated, keep them dry: a soft dry cloth around the stones and along the post, and never a soak, jewelry dip or anything abrasive — water and soap are what wear a gold layer down. 14K Solid Gold can take warm water with a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush around the stones, then a rinse and a dry with a soft cloth. Whatever the metal, wipe the posts with a little rubbing alcohol before they go back in — that is what keeps piercings happy. Do this every couple of weeks for studs you wear daily; earrings collect hair product and skin oil faster than any other piece.

Are pavé studs good for everyday wear?

Yes — a small pavé stud is the classic diamond stud turned down to a whisper, in CZ whichever metal you choose, and it goes from a 9 a.m. meeting to a 7 p.m. dinner unchanged. The only rule depends on the metal: Gold Plated and 18K Gold Vermeil come off before the shower and the gym; 14K Solid Gold can stay in for the shower.

How fast does this earring ship?
