Questions, answered

Everything people ask before they buy this necklace.

Are the stones real diamonds?

No — all 35 are cubic zirconia (CZ), the three baguettes and the 32 round stones alike, and we say so in the first sentence on purpose. The gold is the real thing: solid 14K, all the way through. CZ is a lab-made crystal, cut in the same shapes as a diamond and set the same way; if anything, it throws a touch more rainbow. Across a dinner table, nobody can tell. The difference shows up on the receipt and on a jeweler's tester, and nowhere else.

What is a baguette cut, and why does it sparkle differently from round stones?

A baguette is a long, narrow rectangle — the name is French for a rod, the same word as the bread. It is a step cut: a few rows of flat facets running parallel to the edges, like stairs, where a round stone has many small angled facets. So the two behave differently. The round stones break light into lots of quick little points; the baguettes send it back in long, clean flashes, the way a window catches the sun. The cut came into its own in Art Deco jewelry of the 1920s and '30s, which is why three of them in a row still read as that era.

Is it 14K solid gold all the way through?

Yes — solid 14K gold, no plating, nothing underneath, nothing to wear off. 14K means 58.5% pure gold alloyed for strength, which is the standard for fine jewelry you wear daily. It is naturally hypoallergenic, it will not tarnish, and it is the kind of piece you can hand down without a second thought. The only thing it ever needs is the occasional polish.

How are the stones set?

Two ways, and both are visible in the photos. The three baguettes stand side by side in a channel: a gold bar above them, a gold bar below, and a thin line of gold between each one. The 32 round stones — three above the baguettes, three below and 26 around the edge — are pavé-set, each held by tiny beads of gold it shares with its neighbours. The centre panel is joined to the outer halo at the corners and the sides, with open space in between, so the middle looks like it is hanging inside its own frame.

Does cubic zirconia get cloudy or lose its sparkle?

It gets dirty, which looks like cloudy, and it cleans right back. CZ itself is hard (8 to 8.5 on the Mohs scale, harder than steel) and does not yellow, scratch or dull on its own; what dulls it is the film of lotion, soap and skin oil that settles on any clear stone in a week of wear. A pavé piece simply has more places for it to settle: 35 stones and a lot of small corners. The baguettes tend to show it first, since a flat facet shows a smear the way a mirror does. Clean it, and it is as bright as the day it arrived.

Can I wear a solid gold necklace in the shower and to sleep?

Yes to both. Solid 14K gold does not tarnish, has no plating to wear through and does not react to water or sweat, so this is the necklace you put on and forget about. Soap film and lotion will dull any gold over time — a soak in warm water with a drop of dish soap, then a soft cloth, brings the shine back in a minute.

How do I clean a pavé CZ necklace?

Soak it for five minutes in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap, then go over the stones, the tiny gold beads holding them and the gaps around the centre panel with a soft toothbrush. Rinse, and pat dry with a soft cloth. Every couple of weeks is plenty, or whenever it looks tired. Solid gold does not mind water, so the shower will not hurt it — but soap film is what clouds a stone, so a quick rinse afterwards keeps it bright. Skip toothpaste and bleach, and skip home ultrasonic cleaners: the vibration that shakes out dirt can shake out a small stone too.

Is a solid gold baguette necklace a good gift?

For an anniversary, a wedding or a birthday, yes, and solid gold is why it outlasts the occasion. Solid 14K gold will not tarnish or wear through, so the necklace she opens this year is the same necklace twenty years from now. The baguette has been a classic since the 1920s, which takes most of the guesswork out of her taste. It comes on a 16-inch chain, arrives in our gift box with a suede pouch, and leaves our Miami studio the next business day — which matters when the anniversary is on Thursday.

How fast does this necklace ship?

Ready-to-ship pieces leave our Miami studio within 24 hours on business days, with free standard USPS shipping on every US order — typically 2 to 4 business days door to door. Expedited shipping is available at checkout for ready-to-ship items. You get a tracking number by email when it is on its way, and it arrives in our signature gift box with a suede pouch, so if it is a gift you are already done. We ship worldwide; international delivery runs 5 to 14 business days depending on the destination, and any customs duties are the buyer's.

How long is the chain?

This piece comes in 16 inches. As a guide to necklace lengths: 16 inches sits right on the collarbone, the most popular length for a dainty pendant; 18 inches falls just below it and works with almost every neckline; 20 inches sits a little lower, over a crew neck or as the bottom layer in a stack. If you would like it to sit a little lower, our 1, 2 and 3 inch extenders clip on in seconds.
