How does a morse code necklace work?

Every letter has a pattern of dots and dashes; we render the dots as small round beads and the dashes as short bars, strung in one line along the front of a fine chain. A name, a word or a date becomes a sequence of beads and bars that reads as a delicate beaded necklace to everyone — and as a message to you. The code is international Morse, so anyone who knows it (or looks it up) can read it back; most people never will.

What does "I love you" look like in morse code?

I is two dots, LOVE is dot-dash-dot-dot, dash-dash-dash, dot-dot-dot-dash, dot, and YOU is dash-dot-dash-dash, dash-dash-dash, dot-dot-dash. On the necklace that is 24 beads and bars in three small groups. It is the most-ordered phrase we make, followed by "sister", "mama", "strength" and people's own names.

Is this necklace real gold?

Yes — it is 18K gold vermeil: a thick layer of real 18K gold bonded over solid 925 sterling silver. Vermeil is an FTC-defined standard, not a marketing word, and ours uses a gold layer at least five times thicker than standard plating. Under it is sterling silver, which is hypoallergenic and worth something on its own. You can also choose the Prestige Gold option (the same 18K gold over a brass core) if you want the look for less and wear it less often. Every vermeil piece is covered by our 2-year warranty.

How many letters can a morse code necklace hold?

One word or a short name reads best — roughly up to eight letters, which keeps the beaded section to a few centimetres at the centre of the chain. Longer phrases work but spread the code across more of the chain and lose the "is that a necklace or a message" quality that makes this piece. If you want a phrase, message us first and we will tell you how it will look.

Can I put a date or a number in morse code?

Yes — numbers have their own morse patterns, so a birthday, an anniversary or a wedding date works. Dates are longer than names (each digit is five beads or bars), so we usually suggest day and month only, or a two-digit year. Our Roman numeral date converter page on the site is the other way to wear a date if you want it legible.

Can I shower or sleep in my gold vermeil necklace?

Sleep in it, yes. Shower in it, no. Water, sweat, perfume and hairspray are what age gold vermeil fastest, so the rule is simple: jewelry goes on last and comes off before the shower, the pool or the gym. Put it on after lotion and perfume have dried. When it is off, keep it in the pouch it came in — the pouch is anti-tarnish, not decoration. To clean it, a soft dry cloth; never jewelry dip or anything abrasive, which strips the gold. Treated this way, vermeil keeps its colour for years, which is exactly why we can put a 2-year warranty behind it.

Will people know what my morse code necklace says?

What length necklace should I get?

If you are unsure, choose 18 inches — it sits just below the collarbone and works on almost everyone and with almost every neckline. 16 inches sits at the collarbone (the most popular length for dainty pendants and for layering as the top chain). 14 inches is a choker fit. 20 inches drops a few inches lower and is the right choice over a crew neck or as the bottom layer in a stack. This piece comes in 14, 16, 18 and 20 inches. If you are between lengths, go longer — a chain can always sit a little lower, and if a chain you already own comes up short, our 1, 2 and 3 inch extenders fix that in one clip.
