Questions, answered

Everything people ask before they buy this necklace.

What does the Star of David mean?

It is the Magen David, Hebrew for Shield of David — a Jewish emblem for centuries, and today the best-known symbol of Jewish identity. The two interlocked triangles are read several ways: heaven and earth joined, God and humanity, or the six directions with God at the centre. Most women who wear one give a simpler answer — heritage, faith, family, worn where it can be seen. This one is plain gold, six points and nothing added. It says it quietly, which is usually enough.

Can I wear a Star of David if I'm not Jewish?

Nothing forbids it, but it is not a neutral shape. Anyone who sees it will read it as Jewish, and it is fairest to wear it knowing that. Plenty of women who are not Jewish wear one for good reasons: a Jewish partner or family, a grandparent's history, a conversion in progress, or plain solidarity. Worn in connection with the community, it is welcome. Worn as decoration and nothing more, it will still be read as a statement — just not one you meant to make.

Is it 14K solid gold all the way through?

Yes — solid 14K gold, no plating, nothing underneath, nothing to wear off. 14K means 58.5% pure gold alloyed for strength, which is the standard for fine jewelry you wear daily. It is naturally hypoallergenic, it will not tarnish, and it is the kind of piece you can hand down without a second thought. The only thing it ever needs is the occasional polish.

Is it a good Bat Mitzvah or Hanukkah gift?

It is one of the classic Bat Mitzvah gifts, and solid gold is why it outlasts the party. At twelve or thirteen it may well be her first piece of real gold, and because 14K does not tarnish or wear through, it is still the same necklace when she is thirty. For Hanukkah, it is the night the other seven get measured against. It comes on a 17-inch chain, arrives in our gift box with a suede pouch, and leaves our Miami studio the next business day — which matters in December.

Will a solid 14K gold Star of David tarnish?

No. It is solid 14K gold all the way through, with no plating and nothing underneath, so there is no layer to wear off and nothing to turn dark. Showers, sleep and the gym are all fine. What it does collect is a film of soap, lotion and skin oil that dulls the shine; that is dirt, not tarnish, and it washes off. The one thing worth skipping is chlorine — pools and hot tubs are hard on gold over the years.

Can I wear a solid gold necklace in the shower and to sleep?

Yes to both. Solid 14K gold does not tarnish, has no plating to wear through and does not react to water or sweat, so this is the necklace you put on and forget about. Soap film and lotion will dull any gold over time — a soak in warm water with a drop of dish soap, then a soft cloth, brings the shine back in a minute.

Why is the star lined instead of smooth?

The lines are fine ridges in the gold, running out from the open centre toward every point. Each one catches the light at a slightly different angle, so the star flickers as you move instead of giving one flat flash like a mirror. It is about as close as plain gold gets to sparkling with nothing set in it. The texture is also forgiving: small scuffs that would show on a smooth surface tend to get lost in the lines. The bail is smooth and polished, so that is where fine scratches will show first.

How do I clean a solid gold Star of David?

Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap, five minutes. Then go over the star with a soft toothbrush, since the film settles into the lines, rinse, and pat dry with a soft cloth. Every few weeks is plenty, or whenever the star looks flat instead of bright. Skip toothpaste, baking soda and anything abrasive — they scratch gold and blunt the ridges. And if a jeweler ever offers to buff it, ask for a steam clean instead: buffing takes a little gold off each time, which is how textured gold slowly goes smooth.

How fast does this necklace ship?

Ready-to-ship pieces leave our Miami studio within 24 hours on business days, with free standard USPS shipping on every US order — typically 2 to 4 business days door to door. Expedited shipping is available at checkout for ready-to-ship items. You get a tracking number by email when it is on its way, and it arrives in our signature gift box with a suede pouch, so if it is a gift you are already done. We ship worldwide; international delivery runs 5 to 14 business days depending on the destination, and any customs duties are the buyer's.

How long is the chain?

This piece comes in 17 inches. As a guide to necklace lengths: 16 inches sits right on the collarbone, the most popular length for a dainty pendant; 18 inches falls just below it and works with almost every neckline; 20 inches sits a little lower, over a crew neck or as the bottom layer in a stack. If you would like it to sit a little lower, our 1, 2 and 3 inch extenders clip on in seconds.
