I absolutely love it! I was concerned the letters would be too large for what I was wanting, but they are just the right size. Dainty for sure! I chose a different font and I appreciated the options. Other necklaces I looked at did not have different fonts. I really like the chain, it’s very delicate, not like the other standard ones I’ve seen. I do wish the clasp was a bit larger and easier to open, maybe a lobster claw. And the extender rings are just soldered to the chain, it would be nice to have an o ring connection. The I does not have the classic capitalization bars at top and bottom so you can hardly see the letter as it’s just a straight bar in line with the necklace. I’ll never wear it as you can only see the other letter and I have two children. Looks cheap.

Is this initial necklace real gold?

Yes — 18K gold vermeil: real 18K gold, a thick layer of it, over solid sterling silver. It is real gold in the only sense that matters for daily wear: the colour, the warmth and the way it holds up. What it is not is solid gold all the way through, which is why an initial necklace here costs a dinner out rather than a car payment. Choose Silver and you get the polished sterling base itself.

Whose initial do you wear on an initial necklace?

Your own, most often — and that is the modern way to wear it. The older convention was to wear a partner's or a child's letter; now a single initial on a fine chain reads as a signature. Mothers stack one letter per child on the same chain. Couples wear each other's. A bridesmaid set is the bride's initial for everyone. There is no rule, only the person you want to be reminded of when you touch it.

What is this necklace made of?

316L surgical stainless steel with 18K gold plating — the same steel used for medical implants, which is why it is hypoallergenic and why it does not rust, pit or turn your skin green. This is our everyday tier: built for people who live in their jewelry and never want to take it off for the gym, the shower or the sea. It is not the tier we recommend for heirloom personalization — that is 18K gold vermeil — but for a piece you will actually wear every single day, it is hard to beat.

Can I get two initials on one necklace?

Yes. Our two-initial and multiple-letter designs hold two or more letters side by side — yours and theirs, or the first letters of two children's names. On the pavé designs each letter is outlined in stones; on the tag and sideways designs the letters are cut or engraved. Tell us the letters in the order you want them read, left to right.

What is the difference between an initial necklace and a monogram necklace?

An initial necklace carries a single letter, or a couple of separate ones; a monogram interlocks two or three initials into one design, traditionally with the surname initial larger in the middle. Monograms read formal and preppy; initials read minimal. If you want something that goes under a T-shirt and over a blazer equally well, the single initial wins.

Is this stainless steel necklace waterproof?

Yes — fully. Shower in it, swim in it, sweat in it, sleep in it. 316L surgical steel does not rust and the gold plating is bonded to a base that will not corrode underneath it, which is the failure point for cheap plated jewelry. If it ever looks dull, warm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft cloth bring it back. The only thing we still recommend taking off for is a chlorinated hot tub, and that is more about the chlorine than the steel.

What does the star or moon mean next to an initial?

The initial is who you are; the star is where you are going, or the reminder that you were the gold star the whole time. A crescent moon beside a letter reads as growth — the phase that is still becoming — which is why it turns up for new mothers and new chapters. Together they make a small piece of sky that happens to be yours.

Can I layer this with a plain chain?

Yes — a fine plain chain two inches longer (16 under 18, or 18 under 20) makes the pendant read as the centre of a stack rather than a single necklace. Keep both in the same metal colour. A second celestial piece — star studs, a moon on a longer chain — finishes the sky without repeating it.

How long does a personalized necklace take to arrive?

Most personalized orders arrive within 5 to 9 business days in the US: 3 to 5 business days for us to make it, then free USPS shipping that takes 2 to 4 days. Every personalized piece is made to order in our Miami studio — your name, stone or engraving is added before the gold goes on, so it is part of the piece, not a sticker on top. You get a tracking number the moment it ships. Because it is made for you, we cannot change spelling or size after checkout, so take one more look at the personalization before you pay. We ship worldwide; international delivery is 5 to 14 business days depending on the country, and duties are the buyer's.

What length necklace should I get?

If you are unsure, choose 18 inches — it sits just below the collarbone and works on almost everyone and with almost every neckline. 16 inches sits at the collarbone (the most popular length for dainty pendants and for layering as the top chain). 14 inches is a choker fit. 20 inches drops a few inches lower and is the right choice over a crew neck or as the bottom layer in a stack. Check the length options above — if a length isn't listed, message us and we will make it. If you are between lengths, go longer — a chain can always sit a little lower, and if a chain you already own comes up short, our 1, 2 and 3 inch extenders fix that in one clip.
