What does a fish necklace mean?
That depends on who is wearing it, and there are three usual answers. For Christians, the fish is the ichthys, one of the earliest Christian symbols: ichthys is Greek for fish, and its letters are the initials of "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour." For anyone born between February 19 and March 20, it is Pisces. For everyone else, it is the sea. This pendant is not the plain two-line ichthys outline. It is a fish drawn in open gold, with a curved stripe of stones across its body, a single stone for the eye and a heart outlined in stones at its tail, so it reads as a fish first and carries whichever meaning you bring. The heart needs no explaining.

Who is it for, and is it a good gift?
It suits a Pisces birthday, a confirmation, a graduation, or the woman who would live at the beach if anyone let her. It is a pendant with some sparkle and a story she can tell or keep to herself. Because it is solid 14K gold, there is nothing to tarnish or wear through, so the necklace she opens at eighteen is the same necklace at forty. Is it 14K solid gold all the way through?
Yes — solid 14K gold, no plating, nothing underneath, nothing to wear off. 14K means 58.5% pure gold alloyed for strength, which is the standard for fine jewelry you wear daily. It is naturally hypoallergenic, it will not tarnish, and it is the kind of piece you can hand down without a second thought. The only thing it ever needs is the occasional polish.

Will a solid 14K gold fish necklace tarnish?
No. It is solid 14K gold all the way through, with no plating and nothing underneath, so there is no layer to wear off and nothing to turn dark. Showers, sleep and the gym are all fine. What it does collect is a film of soap, lotion and skin oil that dulls the gold and clouds the stones; that is dirt, not tarnish, and it washes off. The one thing worth skipping is chlorine — pools and hot tubs are hard on gold over the years, and harder on small stone settings.

Are the stones real diamonds?
No. They are cubic zirconia (CZ), every one of them — the stripe, the heart and the eye — and the description says so in its first sentence on purpose. The gold is the real thing: solid 14K. Diamonds in the same settings would put the price up for a difference you cannot see; CZ is cut the same way and sparkles just as hard (a touch more rainbow, if anything), and at pendant size, across a table, they look the same. The difference shows up on the receipt and on a jeweler's tester, and nowhere else.

Can I wear a solid gold necklace in the shower and to sleep?
Yes to both. Solid 14K gold does not tarnish, has no plating to wear through and does not react to water or sweat, so this is the necklace you put on and forget about. Soap film and lotion will dull any gold over time — a soak in warm water with a drop of dish soap, then a soft cloth, brings the shine back in a minute.

How do I clean it?
The open gold outline has nowhere for dirt to hide; the stones are where the film collects, along the stripe and around the heart. Soak it for five minutes in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap, go over the stones with a soft toothbrush, rinse, and pat dry with a soft cloth. Every couple of weeks is plenty. Skip toothpaste, baking soda and bleach, and skip home ultrasonic cleaners — the vibration that shakes out dirt can shake out a small stone too. If a stone ever looks loose, take it off and write to us.

Where will a 16-inch chain sit?
At or just below the collarbone on most women. That puts the fish in plain view in a scoop, square or V neckline, and out of sight under a high crew neck, which for some women is the point. Neck size moves it a little: on a slimmer neck it hangs slightly lower, on a fuller one it sits slightly higher.

How long is the chain?
This piece comes in 16 inches. As a guide to necklace lengths: 16 inches sits right on the collarbone, the most popular length for a dainty pendant; 18 inches falls just below it and works with almost every neckline; 20 inches sits a little lower, over a crew neck or as the bottom layer in a stack.
