Is this a real emerald?
No — it is an emerald-coloured cubic zirconia, cut and set like the real thing, and we say that plainly because a natural emerald this size and this clean would cost more than a car. CZ emerald has one advantage over the real stone apart from price: natural emeralds are full of fissures and chip easily, while CZ is hard, clear and the same rich green in every light. The setting is 18K gold vermeil over sterling silver, with a 2-year warranty.

What does an emerald symbolize, and which month is it the birthstone for?
May. Emerald is the birthstone for May and the stone for a 20th and 55th anniversary; it stands for rebirth, love and — in the older traditions — foresight and truth. Cleopatra claimed the Egyptian emerald mines for herself, which is the level of confidence the colour still carries. It is the green that reads as expensive from across a room.

Is this earring real gold?
Yes — it is 18K gold vermeil: a thick layer of real 18K gold bonded over solid 925 sterling silver. Vermeil is an FTC-defined standard, not a marketing word, and ours uses a gold layer at least five times thicker than standard plating. Under it is sterling silver, which is hypoallergenic and worth something on its own. You can also choose the Prestige Gold option (the same 18K gold over a brass core) if you want the look for less and wear it less often. Every vermeil piece is covered by our 2-year warranty.

What is an emerald cut?
A rectangle with the corners clipped off and long, stepped facets — a cut named after the stone it was invented for, because emeralds are fragile and step cuts protect the corners. It shows off colour and clarity rather than sparkle, which is why it looks so clean and architectural. The stone on this piece is emerald-coloured; whether it is also emerald-cut is in the product photos.

Will the green stone fade or scratch?
No. The colour is in the stone, not coated on it, so it cannot fade; and CZ sits at 8 to 8.5 on the hardness scale, above steel, so it does not scratch in normal wear. What dulls any clear stone is soap film and lotion — a soak in warm water with a drop of dish soap and a soft toothbrush brings the green back in a minute.

Can I shower or sleep in my gold vermeil earring?
Sleep in it, yes. Shower in it, no. Water, sweat, perfume and hairspray are what age gold vermeil fastest, so the rule is simple: jewelry goes on last and comes off before the shower, the pool or the gym. Put it on after lotion and perfume have dried. When it is off, keep it in the pouch it came in — the pouch is anti-tarnish, not decoration. To clean it, a soft dry cloth; never jewelry dip or anything abrasive, which strips the gold. Treated this way, vermeil keeps its colour for years, which is exactly why we can put a 2-year warranty behind it.

What goes with emerald green jewelry — gold or silver?
Gold, almost always. Green and yellow gold are opposite-warm — the gold warms the green and the green deepens the gold, which is why every royal emerald is set in it. Silver or white metal makes the green cooler and more modern, a good look with black and grey. Emerald earrings with a plain gold chain at the neck is the no-effort version.

Are these earrings good for sensitive ears?
Yes. The part that touches your piercing is sterling silver (under 18K gold vermeil), 316L surgical steel, or solid 14K gold depending on the tier you choose — all three are nickel-safe and the same metals piercing studios use for fresh piercings. The reaction most people blame on "gold earrings" is actually nickel or brass in cheap posts, and there is none in ours. If your ears are very reactive, choose the 18K gold vermeil or solid gold option and wipe the posts with a little rubbing alcohol before the first wear.
