What are huggie earrings?
Small hoops that hug the earlobe — usually 8 to 12 millimetres across — with a hinge at the back that clicks shut, so there is no butterfly back to lose and no gap for a pillow to catch. They are the hoop you wear day and night: small enough to sleep in and sit under headphones, substantial enough to read as jewelry. Bigger hoops are an outfit; huggies are a habit.

How do I open and close hinged huggie hoops?
Hold the hoop by the sides, find the tiny notch at the back opposite the post, and swing the post away from the hoop — it hinges open like a door, about 45 degrees, without force. Thread the post through the piercing, then swing it back until you feel the click. Do not pull the two halves apart as if they were a key ring; the hinge is on one side only. If it feels stiff the first few times, that is the clasp being new, not wrong — it loosens to a clean click within a week.

Is this earring real gold?
It depends on the metal you pick, and only one of the three is solid gold. 14K Solid Gold is solid 14K gold all the way through, not a layer over another metal. 18K Gold Vermeil is a 3.0-micron layer of real 18K gold over solid 925 sterling silver — 15 times the 0.2-micron industry standard, and vermeil is an FTC-defined term, not a marketing word. Gold Plated is a 0.5-micron layer of 18K gold over a brass base, 2.5 times that standard. Choosing White Gold/Silver? On vermeil it is the sterling silver itself, on plated a silver-tone finish over brass, and on 14K solid white gold. Warranty: 1 year on Gold Plated, 2 years on vermeil and 14K.

What is different about 14K Solid Gold?
It is the same design, made of gold instead of finished in it. 14K means 58.5% pure gold, alloyed for strength — the standard for fine jewelry you wear every day. It is solid gold all the way through, not a layer over another metal: no base metal underneath, nothing to wear through. That is why it costs more — with vermeil and plated, the gold is a surface layer measured in microns; with 14K, the gold is the metal the piece is made of. The gold does not tarnish and does not mind the shower or sleep, and it is the one that gets handed down. 2-year warranty. Every 14K piece is made to order, so it takes 4 business days longer than vermeil or plated.

Can I sleep in huggie hoops?
Yes. A huggie sits flat against the lobe with a closed hinge, so there is nothing to snag a pillow and nothing to fall out — most women who own one pair sleep in them every night. The only caution is the metal: for sensitive ears, the overnight pair is 18K Gold Vermeil (solid sterling silver under the gold) or 14K Solid Gold in yellow or rose (gold all the way through). The shower is a separate question — 14K can stay in; Gold Plated and vermeil come out first.

What size hoop earrings should I get?
8–12 mm is a huggie (tight to the lobe, for sleeping and daily wear); 15–25 mm is a small hoop (the everyday size that reads from across a table); 30–40 mm is a medium hoop (the outfit size, stops above the jaw); 50 mm and up is a statement. If you have never worn hoops, start at 15–20 mm. If you are buying for a second piercing, go one size smaller than the first. Hoop sizes are the outside diameter; if you want the exact size of this pair before you order, message us and we will tell you.

Can I shower or sleep in my earring?
It depends on the metal. 14K Solid Gold: yes to both — it is solid gold all the way through and does not tarnish, so it can stay on in the shower, in bed and every day in between. The one exception is a piece with pearls or soft natural stones: those come off before water whatever the metal. 18K Gold Vermeil: sleep in it, yes; shower, pool and gym, no. Gold Plated: off before the shower, the pool and the gym, and ideally at night too — water, sweat and perfume are what wear plating down fastest. With vermeil or plated, jewelry goes on last, after lotion and perfume have dried, and back in its anti-tarnish pouch when it comes off. Clean the metal with a soft dry cloth; never use jewelry dip or anything abrasive on vermeil or plated, which strips the finish.

Why do some hoops hurt my ears?
Usually one of three things: nickel, weight or a hinge left half-closed. Nickel in a cheap alloy is what makes a lobe itch, burn or turn red, so the metal touching the piercing matters most — and on this hoop you choose it: Gold Plated is 18K gold over a brass base, 18K Gold Vermeil is 18K gold over solid 925 sterling silver, and 14K Solid Gold is gold all the way through. Weight is the one people forget: a large, heavy hoop pulls on the piercing all day, which is why small, light hoops are kinder to tender lobes. And a half-closed hinge rubs, so swing it shut until you feel the click.

Can I wear these hoops in a second piercing or cartilage?
Lobe piercings, yes, all of them. For a second or third lobe hole choose a huggie or a small hoop one size down from your first. For cartilage (helix), a hinged huggie in the smallest size works on a fully healed piercing — the hinge closes in a circle, which suits the curve of the ear — but the post is the standard lobe gauge, so do not use one in a fresh or tight cartilage piercing. Our flat-back studs are the safer choice there.
