The item is very cute but much smaller than expected, it looked a lot bigger, and the hoop thicker in the picture.

Questions, answered

Everything people ask before they buy this earring.

What does an evil eye necklace or bracelet mean?

Protection. The evil eye is the belief — older than most religions and shared across the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Latin America and South Asia — that envy can do real harm, and the blue eye charm (the nazar) stares that envy down before it reaches you. Worn as jewelry, it is a quiet way of saying: let them look. Most people who wear one grew up with it on a grandmother's wrist or over a doorway.

Is it bad luck to buy an evil eye for yourself?

No. The tradition says the eye is most powerful when it is given, which is why so many arrive as gifts — but buying your own protection is not a superstition, it is common sense. If you want to honour the custom, buy two: one for you and one to give.

Is this earring real gold?

Yes — it is 18K gold vermeil: a thick layer of real 18K gold bonded over solid 925 sterling silver. Vermeil is an FTC-defined standard, not a marketing word, and ours uses a gold layer at least five times thicker than standard plating. Under it is sterling silver, which is hypoallergenic and worth something on its own. You can also choose the Prestige Gold option (the same 18K gold over a brass core) if you want the look for less and wear it less often. Every vermeil piece is covered by our 2-year warranty.

What does it mean when your evil eye bracelet breaks?

Tradition says it did its job — it absorbed something aimed at you and gave itself up. You thank it, you do not repair it, and you replace it. Practically, a bracelet breaks because a clasp caught on a sleeve, which is also a kind of protection. If ours breaks under normal wear within two years, the warranty replaces it; the tradition and the warranty agree on this one.

What is the difference between a hamsa and an evil eye?

The evil eye is the threat and the charm that blocks it; the hamsa is the open hand that holds the charm up. The hand — called Hamsa, the Hand of Fatima or the Hand of Miriam depending on whose grandmother you ask — stands for protection, blessing and strength, and very often has an eye set in its palm, so you get both. If you want one amulet, the eye is the classic; if you want the fuller symbol, the hamsa.

Can I shower or sleep in my gold vermeil earring?

Sleep in it, yes. Shower in it, no. Water, sweat, perfume and hairspray are what age gold vermeil fastest, so the rule is simple: jewelry goes on last and comes off before the shower, the pool or the gym. Put it on after lotion and perfume have dried. When it is off, keep it in the pouch it came in — the pouch is anti-tarnish, not decoration. To clean it, a soft dry cloth; never jewelry dip or anything abrasive, which strips the gold. Treated this way, vermeil keeps its colour for years, which is exactly why we can put a 2-year warranty behind it.

Which wrist do you wear an evil eye bracelet on, and does the colour matter?

The left wrist, by most traditions — it is the receiving side, closer to the heart. But a bracelet on the wrist you will actually see is the one that does its job. Classic blue is protection in its purest form; dark blue adds calm, light blue is truth and openness, green is health and success, red is courage, white is purity and a fresh start, pink is friendship. Ours are mostly the classic blue, with gold or CZ versions for when the eye should also be jewelry.

Can anyone wear evil eye jewelry?

Yes. The evil eye belongs to no single religion or country — Greeks, Turks, Jews, Arabs, Italians, Mexicans and Indians all claim it, and they are all right. Wearing it with respect for what it means is the only requirement. If you are giving it to someone from a tradition that uses it, they will recognise it immediately, which is the nicest part of the gift.

How fast does this earring ship?

Ready-to-ship pieces leave our Miami studio within 24 hours on business days, with free standard USPS shipping on every US order — typically 2 to 4 business days door to door. Expedited shipping is available at checkout for ready-to-ship items. You get a tracking number by email when it is on its way, and it arrives in our signature gift box with a suede pouch, so if it is a gift you are already done. We ship worldwide; international delivery runs 5 to 14 business days depending on the destination, and any customs duties are the buyer's.

Are these earrings good for sensitive ears?

Yes. The part that touches your piercing is sterling silver (under 18K gold vermeil), 316L surgical steel, or solid 14K gold depending on the tier you choose — all three are nickel-safe and the same metals piercing studios use for fresh piercings. The reaction most people blame on "gold earrings" is actually nickel or brass in cheap posts, and there is none in ours. If your ears are very reactive, choose the 18K gold vermeil or solid gold option and wipe the posts with a little rubbing alcohol before the first wear.
