Questions, answered

Everything people ask before they buy this bracelet.

What is a tennis bracelet, and why is it called that?

A flexible line of identical stones set end to end around the wrist — originally diamonds, here CZ. The name comes from Chris Evert, who stopped a 1978 US Open match when her diamond line bracelet snapped and asked officials to wait while she found it; the press called it her "tennis bracelet" and the name stuck. It has been the bracelet you wear with everything ever since.

How should a tennis bracelet fit?

Loose enough to move, tight enough not to slide over your hand. The test: with the bracelet fastened, you should be able to fit one finger between it and your wrist, and it should drift a little when you turn your hand but stop at the wrist bone. Too loose and it hangs over the hand and catches; too tight and the stones turn inward. Measure your wrist snugly and add half an inch.

Is this bracelet real gold?

Yes — it is 18K gold vermeil: a thick layer of real 18K gold bonded over solid 925 sterling silver. Vermeil is an FTC-defined standard, not a marketing word, and ours uses a gold layer at least five times thicker than standard plating. Under it is sterling silver, which is hypoallergenic and worth something on its own. You can also choose the Prestige Gold option (the same 18K gold over a brass core) if you want the look for less and wear it less often. Every vermeil piece is covered by our 2-year warranty.

How do I put on a bracelet by myself?

Tape the free end to the inside of your wrist with a small piece of tape, then bring the clasp round with your other hand — the tape holds the end still while you fasten it. A bobby pin hooked through the end ring works the same way. Lobster clasps are easiest to do one-handed; keep the clasp on top of the wrist where you can see it, then let it rotate to the underside on its own.

Can I stack bracelets, and can I wear one with a watch?

Yes. Two or three on one wrist, mixing one chain, one stone line and one thin bangle, all in the same metal. With a watch, put the bracelets on the other wrist unless the watch is slim — then one fine bracelet beside the watch face looks deliberate and more than one looks like a fight. A Cuban link holds its own next to a watch; a tennis line sits better alone.

Can I shower or sleep in my gold vermeil bracelet?

Sleep in it, yes. Shower in it, no. Water, sweat, perfume and hairspray are what age gold vermeil fastest, so the rule is simple: jewelry goes on last and comes off before the shower, the pool or the gym. Put it on after lotion and perfume have dried. When it is off, keep it in the pouch it came in — the pouch is anti-tarnish, not decoration. To clean it, a soft dry cloth; never jewelry dip or anything abrasive, which strips the gold. Treated this way, vermeil keeps its colour for years, which is exactly why we can put a 2-year warranty behind it.

What is a Cuban link, and what is a foxtail chain?

A Cuban link is the thick, flat, interlocking oval chain — the one from hip-hop and, now, from every jewelry box — with weight on the wrist on purpose. A foxtail is a dense, rope-like weave of tiny V-shaped links that sits like water; it is heavier in the hand than it looks and quieter on the wrist than a Cuban. Both are made in 18K gold vermeil over sterling silver and both are built to be worn daily.

Will the clasp come undone?

Not on its own. Our bracelets use a lobster clasp — a spring-loaded hook that has to be opened deliberately — and the spring does not fatigue in normal wear. A clasp that opens by itself is a broken spring, which is a warranty claim, not a fact of life. If you are nervous about a tennis bracelet, a safety chain can be added by any jeweler in minutes.

How fast does this bracelet ship?

Ready-to-ship pieces leave our Miami studio within 24 hours on business days, with free standard USPS shipping on every US order — typically 2 to 4 business days door to door. Expedited shipping is available at checkout for ready-to-ship items. You get a tracking number by email when it is on its way, and it arrives in our signature gift box with a suede pouch, so if it is a gift you are already done. We ship worldwide; international delivery runs 5 to 14 business days depending on the destination, and any customs duties are the buyer's.

Will this bracelet fit my wrist?

Almost certainly — it is adjustable and sized to fit the average woman's wrist with room to spare. To check, wrap a soft tape measure (or a strip of paper) snugly around the wrist bone, note the number, and add half an inch for a comfortable fit or a full inch for a loose, sliding fit; most women land between 6.5 and 7.5 inches. If you are buying for someone with a very small or very large wrist, message us before you order and we will make it to length.
