Description

Nine natural diamonds in each ear, set so tightly that they read as one larger cushion-cut stone. Four big round brilliants sit in a two-by-two block with a fifth at the centre, and four smaller stones fill the corners — an illusion setting, the old jeweller's trick for turning a handful of small diamonds into one convincing silhouette. The result is a stud with the presence of something much heavier than 0.27 ct, on a simple post and butterfly back. The pair you will forget you put on.

Are these real diamonds?
Yes, every stone is a natural mined diamond, and the pair ships with an IGI (International Gemological Institute) certificate. There are nine round brilliants in each ear — four large ones in a two-by-two block, one at the centre and four smaller corner stones — E–F colour and SI clarity, 0.27 carat for the pair.

Why does each earring look like one big diamond?
Because it is meant to. This is an illusion cluster: nine small diamonds set tight together inside a cushion-shaped outline, with the gold between them polished so it disappears into the sparkle. From conversational distance each ear reads as a single cushion-cut stone of roughly a carat. The 0.27 carat on this page is the real combined weight of the diamonds, not the size the cluster appears.

Are these 14K solid gold all the way through?
Yes — solid 14K gold, no plating, no base metal, nothing to wear off. 14K means 58.5% pure gold alloyed for strength, which is the standard for fine jewelry you wear daily. It is naturally hypoallergenic, it will not tarnish, and it is the one tier in our range you can hand down without a second thought. The only thing that ever needs attention is the occasional polish.

How big are they?
Each stud is about 5 mm across — a shade under a quarter inch. On most ears that sits comfortably inside the lobe with bare skin still showing around it, which is exactly where a stud should sit. Big enough to catch the light when you turn your head, small enough for every day and for a second piercing above. Made by hand, so sizes vary very slightly.

What kind of back do they have?
A standard post with a butterfly (push-on) back, which is what the great majority of people prefer for studs: quick to put in, nothing to unscrew. Push the butterfly all the way up to the lobe so the post cannot work its way loose. If you would rather have screw-backs for peace of mind, message us before you order and we will ask the workshop.

Can I shower or sleep in solid gold studs?
Showering is fine — solid 14K gold does not tarnish, has no plating to wear through and does not react to water or sweat. For sleeping, these have push-on butterfly backs rather than screw backs, so check the back is pushed firmly up to the lobe, or take them out overnight if you move about a lot. Soap film, lotion and hairspray dull any gold: soak them now and then in warm water with a drop of mild soap, rinse, and dry with a soft cloth. Pay attention to the back of the cluster, where residue collects.

Will they feel heavy or droop?
No. The whole pair is 0.27 carat of diamond in a small gold setting — these are light. A cluster stud spreads its weight across the lobe rather than hanging from it, so there is nothing pulling downward, which is the usual cause of a stretched piercing.

Can I wear them every day?
Yes, and they are built for it. Solid 14K white gold does not tarnish and has no plating to wear through, the stones are set down into the metal rather than perched on top, and a stud has nothing to catch on a scarf or a jumper. Take them out for the pool, and give them a wash in warm soapy water now and then — the back of a cluster collects more lotion and hairspray than you would think.

Are these earrings good for sensitive ears?
Yes. The part that touches your piercing is sterling silver (under 18K gold vermeil), 316L surgical steel, or solid 14K gold depending on the tier you choose — all three are nickel-safe and the same metals piercing studios use for fresh piercings. The reaction most people blame on "gold earrings" is actually nickel or brass in cheap posts, and there is none in ours. If your ears are very reactive, choose the 18K gold vermeil or solid gold option and wipe the posts with a little rubbing alcohol before the first wear.
