What Is Gold Vermeil?

Real gold over real silver.
Made to be worn every day.

Gold vermeil is solid 925 sterling silver covered with a thick layer of real 18K gold. Ours is 3 microns thick, about 15 times the 0.2 microns of standard gold plating, so the color lasts far longer.

Our gold-plated pieces use a brass base with 0.5 microns of gold. Some of our designs are also made in solid 14K gold.

What is my birth flower?
January carnation, February violet, March daffodil, April daisy, May lily of the valley, June rose, July larkspur (or water lily), August gladiolus (or poppy), September aster (or morning glory), October marigold (or cosmos), November chrysanthemum, December narcissus (or holly). Each month has a primary flower and a secondary one; we use the primary unless you ask for the other.

Birth flower or birthstone — which should I choose?
Birth flower if you want something quieter and more unusual; birthstone if you want colour. A birth flower is engraved or sculpted into the metal itself, so the whole piece stays one metal and layers with everything. A birthstone adds a point of colour that people notice and ask about. Several of our rings do both — the month's flower with the month's stone set beside it — for the woman who wants the full answer.

Is this ring real gold?
It depends on the metal you pick, and only one of the three is solid gold. 14K Solid Gold is solid 14K gold all the way through, not a layer over another metal. 18K Gold Vermeil is a 3.0-micron layer of real 18K gold over solid 925 sterling silver — 15 times the 0.2-micron industry standard, and vermeil is an FTC-defined term, not a marketing word. Gold Plated is a 0.5-micron layer of 18K gold over a brass base, 2.5 times that standard. Choosing White Gold/Silver? On vermeil it is the sterling silver itself, on plated a silver-tone finish over brass, and on 14K solid white gold. Warranty: 1 year on Gold Plated, 2 years on vermeil and 14K.

What is different about 14K Solid Gold?
It is the same design, made of gold instead of finished in it. 14K means 58.5% pure gold, alloyed for strength — the standard for fine jewelry you wear every day. It is solid gold all the way through, not a layer over another metal: no base metal underneath, nothing to wear through. That is why it costs more — with vermeil and plated, the gold is a surface layer measured in microns; with 14K, the gold is the metal the piece is made of. The gold does not tarnish and does not mind the shower or sleep, and it is the one that gets handed down. 2-year warranty. Every 14K piece is made to order, so it takes 4 business days longer than vermeil or plated.

Can I put my kids' birth flowers on one necklace?
Yes — the family birth flower necklace carries one bloom per person along a single chain, in the order you give us. Two, three, four flowers read as a garden rather than a list, which is the point: nobody but you needs to know which month is which.

Is the flower engraved or raised?
It depends on the design. Most of our birth flower pieces are engraved by hand — fine lines cut into a disc or a signet face. On 18K Gold Vermeil and Gold Plated the engraving is done before the finish goes on, so it is part of the piece; on 14K Solid Gold the lines are cut straight into the solid gold. The drop and stud earrings use a sculpted, slightly raised bloom instead. Both show the flower clearly at arm's length and read as texture from across a room.

Can I shower or sleep in my ring?
It depends on the metal. 14K Solid Gold: yes to both — it is solid gold all the way through and does not tarnish, so it can stay on in the shower, in bed and every day in between. The one exception is a piece with pearls or soft natural stones: those come off before water whatever the metal. 18K Gold Vermeil: sleep in it, yes; shower, pool and gym, no. Gold Plated: off before the shower, the pool and the gym, and ideally at night too — water, sweat and perfume are what wear plating down fastest. With vermeil or plated, jewelry goes on last, after lotion and perfume have dried, and back in its anti-tarnish pouch when it comes off. Clean the metal with a soft dry cloth; never use jewelry dip or anything abrasive on vermeil or plated, which strips the finish.

Does my birth flower depend on where I was born?
Slightly. The list above is the American one, which is the most widely used; the British list swaps a few months (February primrose, May hawthorn, October calendula). If you grew up with a different flower for your month and it means more to you, tell us which and we will use that one wherever the design allows.

Is birth flower jewelry a good gift for a new mom?
Yes — especially the baby's flower rather than her own. It is a way to carry a birth month without a stone, a date or a name on show, which suits women who do not want jewelry that announces itself. Add the birthstone version later for the second child. It arrives in our gift box with a suede pouch.

How long does a personalized ring take to arrive?
Most personalized orders arrive within 5 to 9 business days in the US: 3 to 5 business days for us to make it, then free USPS shipping that takes 2 to 4 days. In 14K Solid Gold, allow 4 more business days, so 9 to 13 in all. Your name, stone or engraving is part of the piece, not a sticker on top: on vermeil and plated it is added before the finish goes on, and on 14K it is in the solid gold itself. You get a tracking number the moment it ships. Because it is made for you, spelling and size cannot change once we start making it, so take one more look at the personalization before you pay. We ship worldwide; international delivery is 5 to 14 business days depending on the country, and duties are the buyer's.

How do I find my ring size at home?
Wrap a thin strip of paper around the base of the finger, mark where it overlaps, measure the length in millimetres and match it to a US ring size chart: 49 mm is a size 5, 52 mm a 6, 54 mm a 7, 57 mm an 8, 59 mm a 9. Measure at the end of the day when fingers are largest, and make sure the strip slides over the knuckle. If you already own a ring that fits, measure its inside diameter instead — 16.5 mm is a 6, 17.3 mm a 7, 18.2 mm an 8. This ring comes in US 3 to 12, in half sizes. Between sizes? Go up — a slightly loose ring is wearable, a tight one is not.
