Nine round brilliant diamonds set shoulder to shoulder at the centre of each ear, ringed by a run of tapered baguettes laid like the rays of a sun, and finished with a beaded gold rim. From across a table each ear reads as one substantial round diamond — which is exactly what an illusion cluster is built to do.

The pleasure of this one is the contrast between the two cuts. A round brilliant scintillates: dozens of small triangular facets throwing light in every direction. A baguette is a step cut, flashing in long clean planes instead. Put a tight cluster of the first inside a ring of the second and the earring reads differently at every angle — glitter at the centre, a slow sweep of light around it. All of it in solid 18K white gold, a richer alloy than the 14K most fine jewellery is made from.

Care

18K carries more pure gold than 14K, which makes it a shade softer — keep these clear of anything abrasive and store them separately from your other pieces. Clean now and then in warm water with a drop of mild soap, paying attention to the back of the cluster where lotion and hairspray collect, and dry with a soft cloth.
