The part that connects the pearl to the hoop is too tight so it doesn’t easily dangle. It gets stuck a little sideways if I don’t move it back down to the loosest position. Other than that, it is a nice piece of jewelry. It was hard trying to find something on here that was made of stainless steel (so I can wear it in water) and cute.

The pearls are perfect - exactly what I was looking for. The only downside is that the backs are a little challenging to get on by yourself, but that’s how all of the threaded flat back earrings seem to be. It’s not an issue, just worth noting if you’re someone with dexterity issues. Otherwise, the earrings are exactly as advertised and are absolutely perfect!!!

Are these real pearls?

Yes — real freshwater cultured pearls, grown in mussels, hand-selected for shape and lustre. "Cultured" means a farmer started the process; the pearl itself is made entirely by the mollusc, layer by layer, which is the only way a real pearl is made. What they are not is imitation (glass or plastic coated to look pearly). Each one is slightly different from the next, which is how you know.

What is the difference between freshwater pearls and Akoya or saltwater pearls?

Where they grew, and the price. Freshwater pearls come from mussels in lakes and rivers, mostly in China; they are solid nacre all the way through, which makes them durable, and they come in the soft, slightly irregular shapes you see here. Akoya and South Sea pearls grow in saltwater oysters, are rounder and more mirror-bright, and cost many times more. For jewelry you will wear on a Tuesday, freshwater is the sensible pearl.

Is this earring real gold?

Yes — it is 18K gold vermeil: a thick layer of real 18K gold bonded over solid 925 sterling silver. Vermeil is an FTC-defined standard, not a marketing word, and ours uses a gold layer at least five times thicker than standard plating. Under it is sterling silver, which is hypoallergenic and worth something on its own. You can also choose the Prestige Gold option (the same 18K gold over a brass core) if you want the look for less and wear it less often. Every vermeil piece is covered by our 2-year warranty.

How do I care for pearl jewelry — can pearls get wet?

Pearls go on last and come off first. Perfume, hairspray and lotion dull the nacre, and pool chlorine will etch it, so they are the one material that truly prefers to stay out of water. A quick wipe with a soft damp cloth after wear is all the cleaning they need; never jewelry dip, never an ultrasonic. Stored in the pouch away from harder jewelry, a freshwater pearl outlasts the outfit it was bought for.

What does a pearl necklace mean?

Wisdom earned the hard way — a pearl is a grain of irritation the oyster turned into something beautiful, and every culture noticed. It has meant purity (hence brides), wealth, and in the last decade, the opposite of stuffy: pearls worn with a white T-shirt and a leather jacket are the current read. If someone asks about the slang meaning, the joke is older than the internet and the necklace is innocent.

Can I shower or sleep in my gold vermeil earring?

Sleep in it, yes. Shower in it, no. Water, sweat, perfume and hairspray are what age gold vermeil fastest, so the rule is simple: jewelry goes on last and comes off before the shower, the pool or the gym. Put it on after lotion and perfume have dried. When it is off, keep it in the pouch it came in — the pouch is anti-tarnish, not decoration. To clean it, a soft dry cloth; never jewelry dip or anything abrasive, which strips the gold. Treated this way, vermeil keeps its colour for years, which is exactly why we can put a 2-year warranty behind it.

Can I wear pearls every day, or are they too formal?

Every day — that is what the dainty scale is for. A single pearl on a fine chain, small pearl huggies or a pearl stud are the opposite of the wedding strand: they read as soft, not dressed-up, and they go with denim better than most gold does. The rule is scale: one pearl or a few small ones for daily wear; the full strand for the occasion.

How can you tell if a pearl is real?

Rub it gently against your front teeth: a real pearl feels faintly gritty, because nacre is built in microscopic layers; an imitation feels glassy-smooth. Real pearls are also never identical — look at a pair of earrings or along a strand and you will see tiny differences in shape and tone. And real pearls are cool to the touch for a moment before they warm on the skin. Ours pass all three.

Are these earrings good for sensitive ears?

Yes. The part that touches your piercing is sterling silver (under 18K gold vermeil), 316L surgical steel, or solid 14K gold depending on the tier you choose — all three are nickel-safe and the same metals piercing studios use for fresh piercings. The reaction most people blame on "gold earrings" is actually nickel or brass in cheap posts, and there is none in ours. If your ears are very reactive, choose the 18K gold vermeil or solid gold option and wipe the posts with a little rubbing alcohol before the first wear.
