I love my necklace. It took me several times to but necklaces from other Etsy shops until I found this shop that makes really nice pieces. It is well made and the gold looks elegant, not dark like other shops. I highly recommend this product (I usually don’t write reviews).

Questions, answered

Everything people ask before they buy this necklace.

How do I layer necklaces without them tangling?

Two inches between each chain, different chain styles, and a clasp that stays at the back. Start with 16 and 18 inches (add 20 for a third), mix a flat chain like a herringbone or snake with a linked chain like a paperclip or cable — flat chains lie still and keep the others apart — and put the heaviest at the bottom. If they still twist, a layering clasp that joins all the chains at the back ends the problem permanently. Take them off one at a time and lay them flat; tangles happen in the jewelry dish, not on the neck.

What is the difference between a box chain, a cable chain, a paperclip chain and a herringbone?

A cable chain is the classic round-link chain — the most delicate and the default under a pendant. A box chain has square links that lie flat and hold their shape, which is why it is the strongest choice for a nameplate. A paperclip chain has long, open rectangular links; it is the chain you wear as the jewelry, alone or layered. A herringbone is flat and liquid, a strip of poured metal that lies against the collarbone and reflects light — worn alone, never under a pendant, and stored flat because it kinks.

What is this necklace made of?

316L surgical stainless steel with 18K gold plating — the same steel used for medical implants, which is why it is hypoallergenic and why it does not rust, pit or turn your skin green. This is our everyday tier: built for people who live in their jewelry and never want to take it off for the gym, the shower or the sea. It is not the tier we recommend for heirloom personalization — that is 18K gold vermeil — but for a piece you will actually wear every single day, it is hard to beat.

Does a herringbone or snake chain kink?

It can, if it is folded. Both are flat chains made of tightly linked plates, and a sharp fold creases them the way it would a ribbon. The fix is prevention: hang it, or lay it flat in its pouch, and never drop it in a dish with other chains. Worn on the neck it cannot kink — it is the drawer that does the damage. A light kink can often be eased out by laying the chain flat and running it gently between your fingers; a hard crease is permanent, so store it the way it likes.

How do I untangle a knotted necklace chain?

Lay it on a hard surface, put a drop of baby oil or olive oil on the knot, and use two pins (or a needle and a toothpick) to tease the loops apart — never pull the ends, which tightens it. Talcum powder works the same way if you would rather not oil it. Once it is open, wash the oil off with warm water and a drop of dish soap, dry, and then store it fastened, hanging or in its own pouch so this is the last time.

Is this stainless steel necklace waterproof?

Yes — fully. Shower in it, swim in it, sweat in it, sleep in it. 316L surgical steel does not rust and the gold plating is bonded to a base that will not corrode underneath it, which is the failure point for cheap plated jewelry. If it ever looks dull, warm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft cloth bring it back. The only thing we still recommend taking off for is a chlorinated hot tub, and that is more about the chlorine than the steel.

Can I shorten or extend this chain?

Extend, yes — our 1, 2 and 3 inch extenders clip onto any of our clasps and add length to a chain that sits half an inch too high. Shorten, also yes: a jeweler can remove links from a cable or paperclip chain in ten minutes; flat chains like herringbone and snake should be cut by a jeweler rather than at home. If you are ordering now and are between lengths, choose the longer one — a chain can sit lower, and it cannot grow.

Can I wear a chain necklace alone, with no pendant?

Yes — that is the whole point of a paperclip, herringbone or satellite chain: the chain is the jewelry. A fine cable or box chain worn alone reads as minimal and is the right base for a layered stack. The only chains that look unfinished alone are the very thinnest, which are made to carry a pendant; everything on this page is made to be seen.

How fast does this necklace ship?

Ready-to-ship pieces leave our Miami studio within 24 hours on business days, with free standard USPS shipping on every US order — typically 2 to 4 business days door to door. Expedited shipping is available at checkout for ready-to-ship items. You get a tracking number by email when it is on its way, and it arrives in our signature gift box with a suede pouch, so if it is a gift you are already done. We ship worldwide; international delivery runs 5 to 14 business days depending on the destination, and any customs duties are the buyer's.

What length necklace should I get?

If you are unsure, choose 18 inches — it sits just below the collarbone and works on almost everyone and with almost every neckline. 16 inches sits at the collarbone (the most popular length for dainty pendants and for layering as the top chain). 14 inches is a choker fit. 20 inches drops a few inches lower and is the right choice over a crew neck or as the bottom layer in a stack. Check the length options above — if a length isn't listed, message us and we will make it. If you are between lengths, go longer — a chain can always sit a little lower, and if a chain you already own comes up short, our 1, 2 and 3 inch extenders fix that in one clip.
