A little smaller than I expected, but they ended up being the perfect size for my 2nd hole piercing. My only issue is that the stem is a bit long (or my earlobe is too thin!), so can sometimes appear to be falling out. Not sure if that can be modified since they are handcrafted

The quality of these earrings is really good and they're beautiful. I deducted a star because the posts are very long for my ears, resulting the earrings hanging which is really just a me problem.

The zirconia stones on these earrings are quite pretty and large. However, the backs on these earrings are so ridiculously tiny, I could not get them on my ears after several tries. If the seller would change the size of these earring backs, they would have a winner.

What size stud earrings should I choose?

3 mm is barely there (a second piercing, a child, a hospital shift); 4 mm is the classic everyday stud; 5 mm is noticeable without being a statement; 6 mm reads from across a room. If you are replacing a pair you love, measure them — the number is the diameter of the stone or disc, not the post. When in doubt, 4 mm: it is the size that works on every lobe and with every other earring.

Screw back or butterfly back — which is better?

Screw back, if you never want to lose one. The post is threaded and the back screws on, so it cannot slide off on a towel, a scarf or a sleeping child. Butterfly (push) backs are faster to put in and fine for earrings you change often. Flat backs — a flat disc that sits against the back of the lobe — are the most comfortable for sleeping and for cartilage. Our solid gold studs come with screw backs; the product page tells you which back each pair has.

Are these 14K solid gold all the way through?

Yes — solid 14K gold, no plating, no base metal, nothing to wear off. 14K means 58.5% pure gold alloyed for strength, which is the standard for fine jewelry you wear daily. It is naturally hypoallergenic, it will not tarnish, and it is the one tier in our range you can hand down without a second thought. The only thing that ever needs attention is the occasional polish.

Can I wear these studs in a cartilage or second piercing?

Second lobe piercings, yes. For cartilage, the right stud is a flat-back with a short post, because a butterfly back pressed into the helix is what makes cartilage piercings sore. The solid gold studs on this page are suitable for healed cartilage; if your piercing is under a year old, use the jewelry your piercer put in until it is fully healed.

Can I shower and sleep in stud earrings?

Sleep, yes — a stud is the one earring that never catches. Shower depends on the material: solid 14K gold and stainless steel do not mind water at all; 18K gold vermeil would rather you took it out, because water, shampoo and soap film are what fade a gold layer over time. The material for this pair is in the first question on this page.

Can I wear solid gold studs in the shower and to sleep?

Yes to both. Solid 14K gold does not tarnish, does not have a plating to wear through and does not react to water or sweat, so these are the earrings you put in and forget about. Soap film and hairspray will dull any gold over time — a soak in warm water with a drop of dish soap, then a soft cloth, restores the shine in a minute. Screw backs mean they stay in through pillows, towels and toddlers.

How do I clean stud earrings?

Soak them for five minutes in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap, brush gently around the stone and the post with a soft toothbrush, rinse, and dry with a soft cloth. Wipe the posts with a little rubbing alcohol before putting them back in — that is what keeps piercings happy. Do this every couple of weeks for studs you wear daily; earrings collect hair product and skin oil faster than any other piece.

Are pavé studs good for everyday wear?

Yes — a small pavé stud is the diamond stud turned down to a whisper, and it is built for days that start at a gym and end at a table. The stones are CZ, set in 18K gold vermeil over sterling silver (or the polished sterling itself), so they go from a 6 a.m. class to 7 p.m. dinner unchanged. The only rule is the one for all vermeil: off before the shower.

Are these earrings good for sensitive ears?

Yes. The part that touches your piercing is sterling silver (under 18K gold vermeil), 316L surgical steel, or solid 14K gold depending on the tier you choose — all three are nickel-safe and the same metals piercing studios use for fresh piercings. The reaction most people blame on "gold earrings" is actually nickel or brass in cheap posts, and there is none in ours. If your ears are very reactive, choose the 18K gold vermeil or solid gold option and wipe the posts with a little rubbing alcohol before the first wear.
