Emerald Necklace

Two emerald necklaces, and they're not the same thing. One is set with a genuine natural emerald and engraved with your name. The other is an emerald-green CZ at a fraction of the price, and we say so on the product page rather than letting you assume. Both 18K gold vermeil at 3 microns over solid sterling silver, 14 to 20 inches.

Emerald Necklace Questions

Which of these is a real emerald?

The Personalized Emerald Name Necklace uses a genuine natural emerald — a mined stone, bezel-set. It's one of only two pieces in this entire store set with a real gemstone. The Emerald Green CZ Necklace is cubic zirconia in emerald green. If a listing here doesn't say natural, it isn't.

Why is a natural emerald bezel-set rather than claw-set?

Because emerald is brittle. It carries internal fractures as a matter of course — that's characteristic of the stone, not a flaw in a particular one — and it chips more easily than its hardness rating suggests. A bezel wraps the edges where a claw would leave them exposed. Any jeweller setting real emerald does the same.

What does emerald symbolize?

It's the May birthstone, and traditionally a stone of renewal and growth. It's also the 20th and 35th anniversary gem, which is when most emerald jewelry gets bought — those two milestones account for more emerald sales than May birthdays do.

Can you wear an emerald necklace every day?

The CZ version, easily. The natural emerald, with some care — no ultrasonic cleaners, no heat, and off before the pool. Genuine emerald is the more delicate of the two, which is the honest inversion of what people expect from a real stone versus a simulant.

How do you clean it?

Warm water, unperfumed soap, a soft brush under the setting where film collects, then dry fully. Most lost sparkle is buildup, not damage. Never an ultrasonic cleaner on emerald — the vibration works into existing fractures.

What length works best?

16 or 18 inches. A single-stone pendant is small, and at 20 the colour disappears into a neckline. 18 puts it just below the collarbone where green reads clearly against skin.
